China Reforms One Child policy

The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress passed a resolution allowing couples to have two children if either parent is an only child.
A proposal to abolish re-education through labour camps was also approved.
The changes in policy were announced following a meeting of top Communist Party officials in November.
The reforms, which came at the end of a six-day meeting of the congress, have already been tested in parts of the country.
They needed formal legislative approval to be put into effect.
China introduced its one-child policy at the end of the 1970s to curb rapid population growth.
But correspondents say the policy has become increasingly unpopular and that leaders fear the country's ageing population will both reduce the labour pool and exacerbate elderly care issues.
By 2050, more than a quarter of the population will be over 65.
The one-child policy has on the whole been strictly enforced, though some exceptions already exist, including for ethnic minorities.

A 36- year old man Pregants Her 14 year old girl

The Nigerian Police in Lagos State has arrested a 36-year old man who allegedly raped and impregnated his 14-year old daughter.
DSP Ngozi Braide, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, made this known when she briefed newsmen in Ikeja.
Braide said the girl had been pregnant for the past two months and that the man claimed to be bewitched. She added that the mother of the girl divorced her father seven years ago.
Braide added that the matter was reported at Meiran Police Station of the Area ‘M’ Police Command.
The victim told newsmen that her father brought a native doctor who convinced her that sex was part of the treatment to cure her undisclosed sickness before she was raped.
“My father gives me native soap and sponge probably for ritual bath always. He once entered the bathroom with me and had sex with me forcefully.
“He took me to bed forcefully several times in his room and when I refused, he threatened to kill me with a knife.
“Since then, he had been making love to me under the guise that I will be cured”, she said.

Kidnapped Lebanese National Found In Kano

A Lebanese national, Mr Hassan Zaid whose name was initially spelled as Zein, that was kidnapped on Monday by unknown persons, has now been released by his abductors.
This is contained in a statement issued on Friday in Kano by the Police Command in Kano and signed by the command’s Spokesman, ASP Magaji Majia.
“Mr Hassan (Zaid) was found by a team of policemen abandoned on the outskirts of Sharada (area of Kano) unhurt,” the statement said.
It added that Zaid had reunited with his family and that the search for the perpetrators continued.
Zaid, owner of MC Plastics factory was kidnapped on Monday by unknown persons at the Sharada Industrial Area.
Five assailants stormed the factory compound and seized Zaid as he got out of his car in the car park, witnesses said.
Shots were fired into the air, sending workers rushing inside for safety. A security guard and a female employee were shot and wounded.
Kidnappings for ransom are common in Nigeria, with scores of foreigners, include those from the sizeable Lebanese community, targeted every year.

The Presdient And Gov. Rotimi In A fresh Word War

The President of the Federal Rebublic and Rivers State  Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, are in a fresh war of words over allegations that President Goodluck Jonathan is training   snipers and keeping 1,000 people on a watch list.

While the governor stated that he was the number one person on the President’s  watch list and that he had evidence to support this assertion, the  Presidency said the governor was like a drunken man in a china shop who was only interested in bringing down everybody with him.

The Presidency further dared the governor to prove his allegation.

The governor, who spoke through his Chief of Staff, Government House, Chief Tony Okocha, in Port Harcourt, on Thursday, said that he was waiting for the invitation of the National Human Rights Commission.

Obasanjo had, in a letter dated December 2, 2013, accused Jonathan of putting 1,000 people on a watch list and having a killer-squad. Obasanjo had also accused the President of training snipers. The President has denied these allegations, calling on the former president to provide evidence to back his allegations.

But at the All Progressives Congress rally, held at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt on Saturday, Amaechi said that he was number one on Jonathan’s watch list.

He had said: “I read the President’s letter; he said Obasanjo should prove and name those on the list. I am number one on the list. I am number one.”

Mr. Okocha said that  the governor had enough  evidence to back his statement.

He said, “The governor knows what he is talking about and this is not just a claim; it is what is happening. There are indices the governor will use to buttress his point.  We will not make many comments now until the invitation from the NHRC  comes.”

He stated, “One thing you should know is that Governor Amaechi does not say one thing today on an issue and say another thing tomorrow on the same issue. You are aware of the battle between us and the police. Considering all we have passed through in the hands of the police, would anybody doubt the fact that the governor is on the Presidency’s watch list?”

However,  the Presidency  dared Amaechi to go  ahead and prove his allegation  that he is one of the 1,000 persons on the alleged political watch list of  the President.

Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Mr. Ahmed Gulak, threw the challenge in an interview with one of our correspondents on Thursday.

Gulak said it was clear to all that Amaechi had completely lost bearing and that Nigerians were aware of the governor’s antics.

According to him,  no  sane man would be talking like the governor is talking to the President.

He said, “Let him (Amaechi) go ahead and prove his claim. I don’t really want to talk about him because he has lost credibility. He is just like a drunken man in a china shop that wants to bring down everybody with him.

“Nigerians are aware of his antics. He has completely lost bearing and the support of the people. When a leader loses the support of his people while still in office, he will react like a mad dog. No sane man will be talking to the President the way Amaechi is doing.”

Meanwhile, NHRC has   said  that it will meet in January to consider the request to investigate allegations of human rights abuses raised by Obasanjo against the President in a letter to the latter.

The President had on Tuesday through the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Adoke (SAN), asked the NHRC to investigate Obasanjo’s allegations.

we got that the Governing Board of the commission chaired by  Prof. Chidi Odinkalu had yet to see the memo sent  to it by the Attorney-General of the Federation.

A source said, “The commission has not taken any decision because the board has yet to meet to evaluate the concerns raised in the memo. This is  holiday period; the board can only see the memo in January”.

we also got that the NHRC would decide the procedure to be adopted in investigating the allegations contained in the letter written by Obasanjo.

A source in the commission disclosed this to one of our correspondents on Thursday.  The source did not disclose when the council would meet over the matter, but it is expected that the meeting will take place after the festive season.

The source, who did not wish to be named, explained that the Governing Council would decide whether it would  invite Obasanjo to a meeting  or adopt a public hearing procedure.

The Commission’s Director of Public Affairs and Communication, Mohammed Ladan, told our correspondent on the telephone that he was on leave, and as a result, was not in a position to confirm the procedure to be adopted in the planned investigation.

“I don’t know the pattern it will take, I am actually on leave right now,” he said in response to our correspondent’s enquiries.

Efforts by our correspondent to get in touch with the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Prof. Bem Angwe, to whom the AGF’s memo was addressed, were not successful.

Calls to his mobile telephone did not go through.

Acting on the instruction of the President, the AGF, had in a memo dated December 23, 2013,  and addressed to the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, requested the commission to investigate the allegations bordering on human rights violations contained on pages 9-10 of Obasanjo’s letter.

In the memo, Adoke had said, “I am to request you to investigate the allegations bordering on human rights violations contained on pages 9-10 of the letter dated December 2, 2013, written by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, to President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, attached to the memorandum under reference.”

A woman took a knife and sliced her husband's penis during a fight at their home in Surulere. Read the report below...

The popular saying that hell has no fury than a woman scorned came to pass on Monday at the Surulere residence of a banker, Bimbo Ajetumobi Daniju and her gospel singer husband Olalekan Idowu Daniju when the woman allegedly took a knife and sliced her husband’s penis during a fight.

Bimbo, staff of a new generation bank in Lagos was said to have accused her husband of not taking care of her and their only child, Opeoluwa. The husband disagreed and while fighting, Bimbo allegedly seized her husband’s penis and sliced it with a knife. Bimbo denied using a knife but her fingernails to teach her husband a lesson on how not to treat a woman. The ugly incident happened on Monday at their Falolu Street, Surulere home.

The matter was reported to the police at Surulere station and the woman was arrested. In her statement to the police, Bimbo denied using a knife on her husband’s penis but her fingernails.
She was later released on bail when her husband insisted that he was not interested in pressing charges against her.

Trouble started on 16 December when the banker who is a staff of the Agege Motor Road branch of the bank, accused her husband who has just returned from the church, of failing to provide for the needs of the family and leaving her to do everything. She also accused him of being selfish and uncaring.

She reportedly shouted at Olalekan who was eating and when he didn’t answer, poured his plate of food on his head. She took a bucket found in the room and smashed it on his head. This resulted in fighting.

Their neighbours separated them and Olalekan went to his sister’s shop to seek refuge but not done yet Bimbo allegedly followed him there and threatened to stab him with a broken bottle.
Relatives and neighbours, it was gathered, intervened and pleaded with the couple to give peace a chance but the couple continued to live like a cat and mouse.

Madam Kehinde Daniju, sister of Olalekan told P.M.NEWS that when her brother ran to her for help, she had to call their mother and other relatives to settle the matter for them in the family house they lived.

She explained that Bimbo’s mother who also lived around the area came and told her daughter not to accept reconciliation until Olalekan got a job. She blamed the couple’s constant disagreement on Olalekan’s refusal to get a job.

When she was leaving she took along the couple’s only son, Opeoluwa Daniju.

This did not go down well with Olalekan who ordered his wife to go to her mother’s house and bring his son before 8 p.m. or there would be trouble.

It was said that Bimbo left the house before 8 p.m and returned 30 minutes later without Opeoluwa.
This resulted in another round of fighting during which neighbours and relatives intervened again to separate them.

Narrating his story, Olalekan said he woke her up on Sunday to ask what she would be wearing to the church so that he could iron it but she didn’t reply.
“ I picked up my son’s cloth, ironed it, bathed him, had my bath and left both of them at home and went to church. In between the service, I came home to check on them and I met her cooking, I even joked that thank God there’s something for them to eat.

"I went back to church and after the service I was I hungry I bought bread and beans to eat and as I got inside, my boy told me he also wanted to eat bread and I gave it to him.

When she learnt that I gave the boy bread, she said I didn’t bother to ask her where she got money to prepare the rice that she ate and she started calling me several unprintable names.
“I responded again and this time it was a huge mistake. She just came near me, carried the plate of beans and pour the food on my head. She held my tie shouting and cursing me at the same time. I managed to extricate myself from her grip and ran out. She nearly suffocated me with the tie. She pursued me and broke a plastic bucket on my head but I continued to run. She picked up a bottle, broke it and threatened to stab me with it. This is a woman that is about five month pregnant.
“I ran to my sister’s shop and tried to involve her but she stayed out of the matter because they all know that she is rude, stubborn and violent. There was a day she and her brothers came here with thugs from Ojuelegba they wanted to beat up everybody here. She has chased me on the street with all sort of dangerous things. I don’t really know what she wants to achieve with all this but that day, her mum came, my mum’s sister came also and they tried to resolve the whole thing.

“I saw my mum’s sister off and before I came back, my mother-in-law had taken my son away and I was like we are trying to solve one issue and you are trying to cause another problem. I told her that if by 8p.m. that evening my child is not back home, she would not find it funny.

“I said that to make her know that I was serious but she said that there’s nothing I can do. She left the house before 8p.m. and came back 30 minutes later without my son. She took her bath and went to sleep I went to my sister and told her I am going to my mother-in-law’s house to get my child but my family ask me not to go there. At that time, I was tired, confused and hungry. I picked up my laptop but while I was trying to watch a movie I fell asleep in the sitting room.

“She woke me up at about 2a.m.. I was in a pair of boxer shorts. She told me that it is either I kill her or she kills me and within seconds she had torn my shorts. This was not surprising anyway as she had torn many of my clothes in the past. She said ‘I am going to kill you this morning. You think I am joking’. The whole thing happened so fast I just felt her hand in holding my penis, and the next thing was blood flowing. I started shouting and crying for her to take me to the hospital.

“She said ‘hospital ke, that’s where you are going to die today’ and that was the last time I saw her. I don’t know how she left the house at that time of the night. She changed her clothes, took a big bag and left, only for us to see her two days later at the police station.
There and then, I decided I cannot continue living with her, she could just decide to put poison in my food and kill me one day.

“It’s only a person that’s alive that can explain anything. She could just poison me and cook up a story just like she did at the police station where she told the police officers that I woke her up at 2a.m. and started hitting her, almost beating her to death and the officers clapped for her for a lovely story. The officers asked how come I did all that and she had the strength to run away and she didn’t run to the hospital, that is, someone that was almost being beaten to death should go to the hospital and there was no doctor’s report. The person you injured brought his own medical report, we could see that the injury was bandaged.

“The officers told her that there’s no mark on her to signify being beaten, she replied that she didn’t go to any hospital because there was no mark on her she also claimed that she didn’t use any knife but that she used her fingernails to scratch my penis,” he said.

Chris Okotie buys N120m Rolls Royce to mark pastoral anniversary

Chris Okotie, the Pastor of the Household of God Church International, recently bought a Rolls Royce Coupe, the 2014 Bespoke Edition, to mark his 30 years as born-again Christian and 27 years as a pastor, we learnt on Saturday.

According to Okotie’s close aide, the pastor spent N120m on the luxury car and had earlier spent N33m on a Range Rover Autobiography to mark a milestone of his church.

The source, in a text message, said, “Pastor Okotie just bought a Rolls Royce Coupe, 2014 Bespoke Edition at N120m to mark his 30 years as a born-again Christian and 27 years as a pastor. He had earlier bought a Range Rover (Autobiography) 2014 Model for N33m, reputed to be the costliest SUV in the world to mark this ministry’s milestone.”

Checks on the Internet showed that the cheapest price of  same Rolls Royce model is about N65m, but it could be more expensive if armoured.

Fifty-five-year-old Okotie was in the news recently for the controversial comments he made during a church service in which he claimed that “all Catholics will go to hell,” and referred to Pope Francis as anti-Christ.

NDA 2013/2014 UNDERGRADUATES APPLICATION FORM

This is to inform the general public that online application for admission into the 66th Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna will be available for sale from 1st November 2013 to 28th February 2014. Admission into NDA is open to both MALE and FEMALE Nigerians. Upon purchase of Access or PIN Codes, prospective candidates should follow the link on the NDA official website www.nda.edu.ng or log on to the application portal www.ndaapplications.org and complete the online application form.

  METHOD OF APPLICATION 

Interested candidates are advised to purchase access or PIN codes from any of the branches or cash offices of Zenith Bank Plc nationwide, at the cost of N2,500.00 only, excluding bank charges of N500.00 for an online application. Applicants applying for admission into NDA MUST also apply to the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB), and carefully select Nigerian Defence Academy as their choice of university. Such applicants are expected to sit for the JAMB Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).

SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION

Applications should be submitted online. On completion of the online application, candidates are to download an Acknowledgement Form. Upon release of the JAMB results, candidates should return to the applications portal and download their Examination Admission Card. Only candidates who make the JAMB national cut-off mark will have access to print out the Examination Admission Card.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The requirements for various undergraduate degree programmes are as detailed in the NDA website / applications portal, as well as in the JAMB Brochure and website. All other information concerning degree courses, eligibility and examination centres are as contained in the NDA website / applications portal.

EXAMINATION CONDITIONS

Only candidates who meet the JAMB national cut-off mark will be eligible to sit for the NDA Entrance Examination at their Examination Centre of choice.

EXAMINATION DATE AND REQUIREMENTS

The examination will be conducted as an Entrance Examination (similar to Post?UTME examination in conventional universities), and is scheduled to hold on Saturday 17th May 2014. Therefore, all eligible candidates are to bring along their Acknowledgement Form, JAMB result slip and TWO (2) postcard sized (3.5 x 5 inches) photographs to the Examination Centre on the examination date. The photographs should show only from the chest upwards and should contain the candidate?s Name, State, Centre and Signature at the back. Only successful candidates at the NDA Entrance Examination will subsequently be invited for the Armed Forces Selection Board following which the list of admitted candidates will be published.

NATURE AND DURATION OF TRAINING

Admitted candidates into NDA for the Regular Course will undergo military and academic training as Officer Cadets for a duration of 5 years. On successful completion of training, graduands will earn a university first degree (BSc, BEng, BA) and a commission into the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
