ASUU: Lectures In UNILAG to Cover up the lost Grounds

As academic activities resumed at the University of Lagos,  yesterday, Monday January 6th, the institution’s branch of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU,  has promised to make sacrifices to make up for lost time.
The Chairman of the university’s chapter of ASUU, Dr. Oghenekaro Ogbinaka, gave the assurance in Lagos.
Lecturers in public universities embarked on an indefinite strike under the directive of ASUU on June 30, 2013. They called off the strike on December 17. 2013.
The lecturers were agitating for Federal Government’s full implementation of an agreement it entered into with the union in 2009.
Ogbinaka said that the union was satisfied with steps the government recently took to ensure that the country’s university system was on the same pedestal with those of many other countries.
He said that University of Lagos lecturers would ensure that areas that suffered during the strike were covered qualitatively.
He urged students to work hard to make up for the lost time.
According to him, the Federal Government had demonstrated willingness to create a conducive teaching and learning environment in public universities.

LASU ASUU THREATENS STRIKE

Dr Adekunle Idris, Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos State University, Ojo (LASU) chapter, on Monday called on the State Government to urgently address some burning issues in the institution.
Briefing journalists in Lagos, Idris urged the state government, university council and management to address the lingering issues to forestall looming crises.
He said that the ASUU congress in the university had mandated the executive committee to explore avenues of dialogue to resolve the contending issues.
The union leader, however, said that they may be forced to declare an industrial action if the dialogue with the government failed to achieve the desired result.
Shedding light on the issues at stake, Idris said that the state government had not implemented the Universities Miscellaneous Provision Act 2012 in LASU.
“This law was passed by the Federal Republic of Nigeria for effective running of universities and we were part of ASUU /FG 2009 agreement.
“One of the provisions of the agreement is that academic staff on professional cadre shall retire at age 70 and non-academic staff at 65.
“It also says that principal officers shall serve for a single term of five years,” he said.

Idris said that the state government had, during a deliberation with the institution’s four unions on Dec. 31, 2010, promised to implement the agreement but failed to do so.

2013 the year of ASUU

The concept of Man of the Year (changed to Person of the Year in 1999) was developed by Time Magazine in 1927 to recognise and feature a person, group, idea or object that “for better or for worse…has done the most to influence the events of the year.”
It took me only a few minutes to decide that there was no single person in Nigeria in 2013, who “influenced the events of the year” to the point of being named Man of the Year. True, there were notable individuals who made significant splashes, but there were even more interesting developments for which groups of individuals were responsible. Although each of the developments was specific to a particular sector of our national life, many citizens were affected beyond those sectors. The four major developments, which dominated the news “for better or for worse” in 2013, are: Corruption in the economic sector; terrorism in the security sector; 2015 politics in the political sector; and the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities in the education sector. Most events in 2013 were influenced by one or more of these developments.
